Vinyl accompanying the new Women in Revolt! exhibition, a touring exhibition from Tate Britain, this vinyl compilation record has been curated to further reveal the music and sound art that women musicians were creating during this artistic and societal paradigm shift.
This landmark exhibition at the Whitworth will feature over 80 women artists and collectives whose ideas helped fuel the women’s liberation movement during a period of significant social, economic and political change. The exhibition has been specially reshaped and refreshed for the Whitworth, speaking to Manchester’s radical histories.
The music that defines and defied this era, not only soundtracked but spurred on increasingly impassioned creative output and representation for women. Bands included on the compilation, like X-Ray Spex and The Slits, remain front of mind for bands espousing this robust stance both sonically and politically. Equally impactful artists such as Ludus also feature, whose lead singer Linder Sterling impacted the genre with her radical feminist visual artwork and music.
A neon yellow 180 gram vinyl with printed inner, the LP tracklist was compiled collaboratively between Linsey Young, Curator of Contemporary British Art at Tate Britain, and Julie Weir, Head of Music for Nations.
