Saturday 25 January, 1:00pm - 4:30pm

Join us for an afternoon of discussion and live performance marking the final weekend of Barbara Walker: Being Here. In two panel discussions, leading academics and professionals explore Walker’s approach to Black British representation, as well as wider issues around race, accessibility, and inclusion in the arts. Speakers include Marlene Smith, Richard Hylton, Alice Correia, Keisha Thompson and Andrew Ibi. Finally, David Kayode (Purple Collective) curates a live performance featuring diaspora musicians.

About Purple Collective

Purple Collective is a community-oriented arts organisation active in Manchester’s creative scene since December 2022. Alongside hosting jams, gigs, spoken word nights, and club events, the collective has worked in close collaboration with organisations such as CAN and Contact Theatre to deliver creative education programmes to the local community, with the goal of promoting creative expression in people of all ages.

This event is organised by Purple Collective in collaboration with the Whitworth and is generously supported by British Art Network (BAN). BAN is a Subject Specialist Network supported by Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, with additional public funding provided by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The Network promotes curatorial research, practice and theory in the field of British Art. Its members include curators, academics, artist-researchers, conservators, producers and programmers at all stages of their professional lives.
