This illustrative book has been inspired by the Whitworth’s first exhibition dedicated to Japanese prints in over 100 years, Beneath the Great Wave: Hokusai and Hiroshige.

Presenting rarely seen works from the Whitworth collection alongside institutional artworks and private loans plus new essays by Timon Screech (International Research Centre for Japanese Studies, Nichibunken, Kyōto) and Imogen Holmes-Roe (Curator of Historic Art, the Whitworth), Beneath the Great Wave explores the evolution of ukiyo-e prints and their enduring global impact across visual art, fashion and contemporary graphic design.
