This framed artwork features a postcard of a beautiful embroidered towel made in Turkey 1750-1850, which is currently on display in Performing Trees, an exhibition showcasing more than 50 works from the Whitworth’s collection.
The exhibition explores how trees perform as symbols of life, embodying vitality, growth and abundance and how they act as witnesses to history, standing as silent observers through generations.
The Ottoman towel is embroidered with a city scene, showing cypresses flanking a cemetery entrance.
