Exhibition catalogue to coincide with Albrecht Dürer's material world at the Whitworth from 30 June 2023 - 10 March 2024.

The painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important figures of the German Renaissance. This book accompanies the first major exhibition of the the Whitworth's outstanding Dürer collection in over half a century. It offers a new perspective on Dürer as an intense observer of the worlds of manufacture, design and trade that fill his graphic art.

Artworks and artefacts examined here expose understudied aspects of Dürer's art and practice, including his attentive examination of objects of daily domestic use, his involvement in economies of local manufacture and exchange, the microarchitectures of local craft and, finally, his attention to cultures of natural and philosophical inquiry and learning.

Great Artist, Great Catalogue, Great Gallery.

The art of the month for September was Durer's 'St Jerome' at the Open University Art Forum with a link to 'The Whitworth' hence I bought the catalogue. As a Mancunian having lived 'down south' for the past fifty years it was great to read such a really good rendering of Durer's work in this catalogue. I am about to start my first year of my postgraduate MA in Art History and galleries such as the Whitworth make it worthwhile.

    Looking through Durer’s eyes

The pinpointing of the importance Durer felt for his beloved home town of Nuremberg brings his works more to life. Nuremberg was so ahead of much of Europe which influenced and gave advantage to Durer. This has been a catalogue displaying the challenges faced by the artist and other members of the community.
